●Develop Chinese Printing by Scientific &Technologic Progress

Printing is one of 4 inventions of ancient china. But our printing technology was backward in the near past.
We set up a new printing industry and made great achievements under the guidance of the Party and Government in the 50 years since the founding of PRC. Especially since 1978 when we started reform and opening to the world, our printing and printing equipment industries have moved ahead at high speed.
A revolutionary change has happened in our printing technology. A breakthrough has taken place. It is pre-press electronic systems. We have stopped using "lead and fire "and started to use "laser and electronics ". Color offset printing is common in China now. We have basically achieved the 16-character guideline we put forward in early 1980's, which was "laser phototypesetting, electronic color separation, offset printing and automatic binding ". Our printing capacity is very big, enjoying a buyer market. Package printing and special printing are increasing ghastly as an important pillar and new incremental point. Our printing technologies and equipment are more diversified, with more specialties and better quality so that our printing demands are basically well met. Ownership of our printing firms is diversified now too. We had mostly state firms in the past but now we have state, collective, j/v. wholly owned and domestic private ownership. Our exchanges with foreign counterparts are moving in full scale too.
We made such progress in the last 20 years for many reasons. But the key reason is that we develop printing industry by scientific and technological progress, which showed its essential effects in many ways, such as the 4th generation of laser phototypesetting system handling Chinese characters, long distance news editing transmission system, various technical upgrading projects, import of new technologies and its extensions in China, etc.
Though we have made great progress, we still have a big gap with advanced countries in both management and technology, so we still can't suit well to our domestic demands. We have new challenges and chances for progress as the new century is coming.
Our printing firms have two tasks: deepening reforms, making structural adjustment and moving to market economy & modern management. Our printing firms are now facing heavy market competition in and outside China, they need to extensively use new printing technologies, and suit to new market demands. So they have to deepen reforms, put markets in their focus, adhere to technological progress and scientific management, so as to improve their competitive edge. Our association organized a study of international printing development trends and demands, and put forward our technological progress guideline for the future. It is "digitization and network for pre-press, multi-color and high efficiency for printing, varieties and automation for post-press, high quality and series of equipment and materials." This 28-character guideline puts electronic and networks pre-press and high tech products as its center, and it will bring our printing industry to a brand new level. Members of Chinese printing industry agreed this guideline on broadly. We will try to get supports from all sides and try to realize this guideline. We will also strengthen exchange & cooperation with foreign counterparts so as to push forward the technological progress of our printing and printing equipment industries
