It is forecast that GDP of Thailand will grow by 4-5 % by this year. The figure principally reflects the better recover of total Thai economy. This includes the printing industry, as its continual expansions of production and export. According to the Ministry of Industry's analysis, Thai printing's opportunity to obtain more market s000000000hares is likely as seen in the 27.8 % difference between the year 2001 export figure of US$ 116.3 million (comprised US$ 49.8 million for printing and US$ 66.5 million for packaging) and that of the year 2000 US$ 91 million. For the year 2002, 10 percent annual growth rate is expected to achieve the export value at US$ 150 million. In addition, household expenditure will affect the growth in the Thai economy, as the government has policy to activate the industry. This makes the total sales by the Thai printing industry increased by 10-15 % each year since 2000. The Federation of Thai Industries News reports that the printing industry along with others can generate trade revenue of US$ 46.5 billion per annum for the Kingdom. Specifically, this industry can annually earn more than US$ 2.3 billion with the combination of export figures from package printing, sticker printing, sticker, labelling, warrantee and catalogue printing.

Besides, relevant machinery import volume indicates higher productivity due to Thai entrepreneurs' more confidence in investment and business expansion, as seen in the 39.6 % difference between the year 2002 Machinery import figure – US$ 187 million and that of the year 2000 – US$ 134 million.

Market Segmentation

Thai printing industry is extremely diverse; whereby there are a relatively large number of sectors, each with very different products and turnovers. It is found that the most significant proportion of turnover is accounted for by advertising segment, which encompasses commercial catalogues, and all advertising material, including direct mail. Indeed, sales in this sector represented 28% of the total in 2001.
Note that direct mail printing market represents a rising proportion of the direct marketing sector which includes telemarketing, display advertising and printed inserts. While the typical direct mail product is a pack with personalized letter or voting form, non-personalized brochure or insert and a business reply envelope. Packaging is the second rank at the level 18%. Having seen fall for the first time since 1999, books, brochures, leaflets, etc. becomes the third rank with 12% market sale. For periodicals, commercial printing and newspapers, they show their turnovers in the proportion close one another, ranging 8-10%. Note that security and business form products may be not the prosperous trend in the future, as the influence of digital means through network, such as E-commerce.

Background and Significance of the Thai Printing Industry

Acording to the statistics prepared by the Department of Export Promotion, the Thai printing industry consists of 2,500 companies, which can be classified as followings:

- Small size (< 50 employees) 635 companies
- Medium size (50-200 employees) 1,115 companies
- Large size (> 200 employees) 750 companies

The Thai printing industry is expected to be a significant player under the following aspects:

  • The industry is economically efficient in terms of value added services and local raw material consumption. Even though some resources are imported, up to 80 percent of the industry's total export value still benefit the country.
  • The industry can create higher rate of employment since it has direct impacts on the related businesses i.e. service bureau, ink& paper production, design houses, photo studios and other relevant suppliers.
  • Thai printing industry can obtain more shares in some countries in asia where higher cost of labors and prices of lands as well as insufficient number of skillful personnel did make them less competitive.

    Future of Thai printing industry

Thailand possibly becomes the center of printing production in the indochina-region, regarding the proper geographical site. Board of Investment (BOI) reports that there are over 100 local and international investors decided to do and expand their printing business in Thailand this year. Recently the BOI has reconsidered the beneficial and privileges to investors on several conditions such as the cancellation of export regulation and foreign stockholder limitation, including the encouragement on using new machines instead of the imported old ones. In addition, easy access to financial sources is possible.

The BOI has discussed with the Printing Industry Club, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), on these issues. It includes other current requests e.g. possible amendments on tax reduction for equipment, accessories, raw material and other materials in printing. It is hoped to set the new acceptable regulations through the government soon, based on these obstacles, as the FTI fully supports and co-operates with the BOI.

Interestingly, The Thai printing industry comes closer to the practice of National Labor Skill Standard Regulations and Labor Skill Standard Test Procedures for Offset Printing Field. The Department of Skill Development has shown its full support as these skill developments will enhance higher standards for offset printers. Specifically, this programme will be the golden opportunity for employees, entrepreneurs and government sectors as soon as it becomes a reality, expected in 2003, under the B.E. 2545 Vocational Training Promotion Act. It is hoped to solve the problem of inadequacy of genuinely qualified offset printers with through knowledge and skills on high technology machinery to produce quality works that meet clients' demands despite the fact that there is a large number of such workers in printing houses.

    Challenges

There are a number of important factors affecting demand for printing in Thailand. These include:

  • Trends in consumer spending
  • The state of economy
  • Changing customer expectations: quality, fast, cheap or reasonable price, on-demand and personalized
  • Globalization: E-commerce, distributed printing, internet
  • Environmental concerns: safety, pollution, package recycle
  • Standards: ISO 9000, 14000 and SA 8000

To discuss the challenges facing our printing industry, followings are some problems that we pointed out:

      1. Over capacity and high competition

It can be said that printing business is one of the Thailand's most successful sectors. But, with very low net profit margins and high capital expenditure investment. In addition, in the future, trade sources report that the industry inevitably will be subject to the same pressure as previous of over-capacity and very high levels of worldwide competition. At present, the proportion of printing houses working below capacity is estimated around 90% of total. This is reflected by severe price competition, whereby additional costs are becoming increasingly difficult to pass on to the customer. This results in printers having to cut costs and strive for efficiency gains, which frequently involves making large, high risk capital investment into new equipment and machinery. The other view is to buy out the competitor that has an excellent customer base, skilled employees and manufacturing efficiencies, excellent maintained printing presses. This type of company will cost more than the norm.

      2. Lacking expertise

Due to the printing industry situation as a supporter of other industries in the world market, there is a need of other requirements from business adjustments and effective administration, comprising human resource management, clear business vision, competitiveness, cost advantage (per unit), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) as well as cooperation among departments.
Besides, the entrepreneurs should develop their product quality to meet international standards such as ISO 9000, ISO 14000, ISO 12647 and SA 8000 as trade barrier tend to be more critical. Product differentiation and product-line expansion should also be created on Economy of Scope but not Economy of Scale, to serve a variety of customer needs in the near future. Since the Economy of Scale may not be practical enough in the future competition, especially when compared to those of China or Vietnam with significantly low operating costs.

      3. Rapid change of Technology

Another crutial challenge is the rapid change of technology. This makes the entrepreneurs worry and less confidence to continue their business. Of course, they lack understanding of technology; while printers and operators fear to involve the new automatic machines. Digital technology, in corporate with In formation Technology will play an important role in production system. Thus, knowledge-based management is necessary, whereby the new modern printing business is established. Digitalization is one example. The fact is that the ones who own technology has power to win the others who has no technology. That is why in the past 2-3 years, some larger printing houses have already closed down or sold out and the smaller were 'going out of business'.

It is believed that the development of new printing technology will have the most significant impact on the Thai printing industry. This is likely to improve efficiency, leading to greater productivity levels. Indeed, productivity has risen by approximately 15 % in real terms over the last ten years period to 2000. Packaging printing is the most effective; for example flexography and gravure. Example of the advancement of printing technology existing in the industry:

        - Digital workflow system
        - Information Integration system: CIP3/CIP4
        - Digital asset management
        - Standard data format: JDF / PDF
        - Computer-To-Plate / Digital plates
        - Computer-To-Press / Direct imaging technology / Digital press
        - Hi-fi printing: 6-7 color printing / FM screen
        - UV printing
        - Automatic printing press
        - Biodegradable plastics

Therefore, Thai printing industry's future solely depends on entrepreneurs whose current direction is considered vital. Should they succeed in adjusting themselves to different situations in time, the industry growth rate can eventually increase and become key industry in the 21st Century.
